Relax on Hornsea Beach

Hornsea Beach is big, breezy and refreshingly low-key. Unlike some of the busier Yorkshire resorts, it retains a quieter feel and is definitely a place for long walks and sea air rather than arcades and busy crowds.
The mix of sand and shingle means the beach changes with the tide; there’s always space to spread out, even at high tide. It’s particularly good for a morning walk or an early evening wander when you can witness the soft dusk light over the water.
For families, it’s an easy win; simple pleasures like paddling, beach games and fish and chips on the seafront are a big draw for those looking to tire out kids in the best possible way. Couples tend towards the quieter stretches of the beach. Dog owners will also appreciate the space outside of the usual seasonal restrictions.
Our insider’s tip: Head down early or later in the day for the best experience; it’s quieter, and the light along this stretch of coast is at its best.
Good to know:
- Best for: Couples/families/dogs
- Dates & times: Open year-round (seasonal dog restrictions apply 1 May - 30 September)
- Parking: Eastgate Car Park, 21 Marine Dr HU18 1NJ
- Price: Free to enjoy
Stroll around Hornsea Mere

Just inland from the seafront, Hornsea Mere offers visitors a completely different pace. As Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake, it’s calm, spacious and ideal for a slower morning or afternoon walk.
Many of the walking routes are circular, with everything centred around the lake. Level paths work well for families and anyone looking for an easy-going stroll, or even a slow-paced jog. You can spot birdlife along the water, and there’s plenty of space for children to roam. The lake and its walking routes are also extremely dog-friendly, with the cafe welcoming canine companions too.
Boat trips run seasonally, but even without them, Hornsea Mere is a lovely place to wander and take in the scenery.
Our insider’s tip: Bring a takeaway coffee and take your time; the atmosphere here rewards slowing down rather than rushing through.
Good to know:
- Best for: Couples/families/dogs
- Dates & times: Open year-round, Monday-Sunday 9am-5.30pm
- Parking: Nearby parking available at the Mere, HU18 1AX

Hornsea Village is a relaxed retail outlet just outside the town centre, bringing together a mix of well-known brands, independent stores and enticing places to eat. It’s the kind of spot you can dip in and out of, whether you’re browsing for homeware, picking up something practical or stopping for coffee.
This shopping village works particularly well as a weather-proof option during a weekend stay. With plenty of on-site parking and everything in one place, it’s an easy, low-effort addition to your itinerary; ideal for a slower morning or a pit stop to grab a light lunch in between coastal walks.
Our insider’s tip: Pair it with a cafe stop and treat it as a slower, indoor break between coastal-based activities.

Browse Hornsea Garden Centre

A go-to family activity whenever we’re away with our young family is a trip to a local garden centre, and you’ll discover Hornsea Garden Centre is more than just plants. It’s a well-kept, spacious spot with a cafe, gift shop and seasonal displays that make it feel like a destination in its own right. Hornsea Garden Centre boasts a kids' outdoor play area too, so you can tire them out before or after refuelling them with a doorstop-sized slice of cake!
A browse here works particularly well for families and couples looking for a relaxed morning before heading back out to the coast. The cafe is a good option for a warming lunch or coffee, and there’s enough variety to keep everyone occupied for a couple of hours.

Take a day trip to Bridlington or Beverley

If you’re staying for a full weekend, Hornsea works well as a base for exploring further afield. Nearby Bridlington (just a half-hour drive away) offers a more traditional British seaside day out, with a busy harbour, amusements and plenty of activity. Take a birdwatching cruise from Bridlington Harbour and enjoy breathtaking views of the iconic cliffs around Bridlington and Flamborough.
Beverley, on the other hand, offers a different atmosphere altogether, boasting plenty of character and charm with its historic streets, independent shops and a thriving multicultural food scene, making it a good option for couples looking for a more refined day out.
Stroll around Beverley Minster, and admire one of Britain's finest examples of medieval Gothic architecture, before enjoying a picnic at Beverley Parks Nature Reserve with its pleasant fruit orchard and fascinating beehives.
Both Bridlington and Beverley are within easy reach of Hornsea.
Our insider’s tip: Choose Bridlington for energy, Beverley for history and parks.
