Explore Burford High Street

If you do just one thing in Burford, make sure it’s a slow wander down the town’s famous High Street. Lined with honey-hued stone buildings, the steep road slopes gently towards the River Windrush, creating one of the most recognisable views in the Cotswolds.
Many of the buildings date back hundreds of years and now house independent boutiques, cosy cafes and traditional pubs.
For photographers and first-time visitors to the Cotswolds, this picture-postcard street alone makes the centre of Burford one of the most memorable stops in the region.

Visit Burford Garden Co.

Just outside of the town, you’ll find the Burford Garden Company, which is far more than a traditional garden centre. Beautifully curated and thoughtfully designed, it’s as much a lifestyle and retail destination as it is a place to buy plants.
Step inside and you’ll find stylish homewares, seasonal displays and a food hall packed with local produce. The cafe and restaurant are equally popular, serving relaxed brunches and lunches using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
Couples often treat it as a leisurely stopover for coffee and browsing, whilst families appreciate the welcoming atmosphere. We popped in for lunch and a browse with our three kids; all of whom enjoyed choosing items for their lunch boxes (the slices of brownies went down a storm) and a turn of the gift shop.

Take a walk along the River Windrush

For a slower pace and a dose of fresh air, head down towards the River Windrush where gentle, easy footpaths follow the water through quiet corners of town.
These short walking routes are ideal if you’re travelling with dogs, kids, or simply want to stretch your legs after a relaxing pub lunch. Ducks paddle downriver, stone bridges arch over the water, and the surrounding cottages create that classic Cotswolds postcard view.
It’s particularly lovely early in the morning or just before sunset, when the town becomes quieter; perfect for those who want to capture a photo within the stunning scenery or simply amble back to their holiday lodge whilst taking in the pretty surroundings.

Visit St John the Baptist Church

Overlooking the town is the Church of St John the Baptist, one of the most impressive medieval churches in the Cotswolds, and a fantastic place for history buffs to witness the incredible architecture.
Dating back to the 12th century, the church is known for its intricate stonework, historic memorials and peaceful interior. Even if you’re not usually drawn to historic churches, this one is worth stepping inside to witness its architecture and atmosphere.
The pretty churchyard provides a quiet pause away from the bustle of the high street, and nearby you’ll also happen upon Church Green, a row of ancient alms houses, built by Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, in 1455.

Enjoy traditional pubs, like The Farmer’s Dog

A visit to the Cotswolds wouldn’t be complete without experiencing one of its welcoming pubs. Many date back centuries and offer traditional Cotswolds hospitality; think roaring fires in winter and sunny terraces in summer. After a day exploring Burford or walking in the surrounding countryside, settling in for a pint or a relaxed meal is very much part of the routine here.
Local pubs tend to champion produce from across Oxfordshire and the wider Cotswolds, with menus often featuring seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and producers. One of the most famous Cotswolds locations is Clarkson’s Farm and Jeremy Clarkson, who owns the much-talked-about countryside pub, The Farmer’s Dog.
Located just a short drive from Burford, the pub celebrates British produce with a menu focused on locally sourced ingredients. It has quickly become a popular stop for visitors exploring the area, particularly those keen to combine great food with a touch of celebrity spotting.
